Medication Assisted Treatment

Medication Assisted Treatment

DBHIDS is continuing its concerted efforts to increase the availability of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) in all forms across all levels of care. Medication-assisted treatments (MAT) are empirically supported as effective interventions to treat opioid addiction and include methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone XR (aka Vivitrol).

In addition to increasing the treatment capacity, DBHIDS is employing a more comprehensive response to opioid addiction by transforming the practice of detoxification to withdrawal management. Withdrawal management provides medical interventions in combination with appropriate psychosocial supports to ensure safer and more successful transitions from illicit substance use.

Why MAT?

Multiple studies have proven that MAT, in combination with psychosocial treatment is effective in:

  • Reducing mortality
  • Lessening illicit opioid use
  • Increasing retention in treatment
  • Lowering criminal justice consequences of substance use
  • Diminishing overall health care and societal costs

DBHIDS is linking individuals to a MAT treatment provider to align with evidence-based practice and improve outcomes related to the opioid epidemic. Numerous studies have shown that MAT is more effective than detoxification followed by “medication-free” treatment.

Treatment Availability Database

DBHIDS launched the Treatment Availability Database to inform providers and the community of available treatment capacity. The Treatment Availability Database includes bed based availability and a list of community MAT programs.  Published availability is for informational purposes only, and is not inclusive of all providers, programs, or levels of care within the network. Although this information is updated regularly, it is NOT real-time information. If you or someone you know are in need of Substance Use Disorder treatment, please call 1-888-545-2600 and read our Accessing Treatment information sheet.
