SUMMARY:Mural Arts Dedication: 'Embracing the Light'
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we celebrate the dedication of artist James Burns’ “Embracing the Light\,” a community-driven mural project at St.\nChristopher’s Hospital for Children that raises awareness about suicide prevention and mental health resources. \nDeveloped through mindful writing workshops and a performance supported by First Person Arts\, the project included input from a committed steering committee and hundreds of participants during public paint days at the hospital. \nThe mural enhances St. Christopher’s legacy of using art to uplift patients\, families\, and staff. Burns\, who has spent over a decade using art to spark conversations about suicide prevention\, designed a piece that promotes dialogue and reduces stigma. This mural not only transforms the hospital’s exterior but also invites essential conversations about mental health\, especially for young people and their families. \nIf you or a loved one is in crisis\, call or text 988.

SUMMARY:Recovery Walks! 2025
DESCRIPTION:September is National Recovery Month\, allowing us to increase public awareness about the power of recovery. We celebrate victory over addiction\, promote evidence-based treatment and recovery practices\, and honor the strong\, proud recovery community and the service providers and communities who work with us towards our vision of “Transforming Lives Through Sustained Recovery!” \nReports of drug overdoses and an alarming number of deaths remain at the forefront of discussions about addiction\, which experts say is a grim reality of the current nationwide crisis. \nBut it can overshadow the fact that nearly three in four people who struggle with substance use survive and go on to live in recovery\, according to national estimates. \nThousands of people are expected to gather Sept. 20 in Philadelphia’s Navy Yard to recognize those in addiction recovery during PRO-ACT’s annual Recovery Walks! event.

SUMMARY:Beyond Expectations: Reclaiming Love – Self\, Brotherhood\, and Community
DESCRIPTION:Beyond Expectations: Reclaiming Love – Self\, Brotherhood\, and Community is a powerful storytelling event hosted by DBHIDS Engaging Males of Color (EMOC) in collaboration with First Person Arts. \nIn a world that often defines men and boys of color by limits rather than potential\, this evening is a radical act of truth-telling\, healing\, and reclamation. Through the transformative art of storytelling\, men of color and community members will share lived experiences centered around three interconnected forms of love: self-love\, love for your brother\, and love for our community. \nThis is not just an event\, it is a gathering of the village. We come together to explore what truly means to love ourselves in a society that often teaches us not to. We affirm the bonds of brotherhood that help us carry one another through struggle and triumph. And we ask the village: how do we love our children\, especially our boys\, so they feel seen\, valued\, and protected? We ground this gathering in the wisdom of the African proverb: “If the child does not feel the warmth of the village\, he will burn it down just to feel it”. This event is not just a Call to Action but a Call to LOVE. \nCLICK TO REGISTER
