SUMMARY:DBHIDS Immigrant/Refugee Wellness Academy (IRWA)
DESCRIPTION:The City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIDS) is excited to launch its fourth cohort of the Immigrant/Refugee Wellness Academy. IRWA is a free certificate training program designed to empower and prepare Philadelphia’s multilingual/multicultural immigrants and refugees with the knowledge\, resources\, and tools to engage in activities that address the mental health and behavioral challenges experienced by local immigrant and refugee communities. \nThe program will enhance participants’ leadership skills\, increase knowledge about behavioral health and intellectual disability challenges\, and empower graduates with the tools to access local resources for themselves and their communities. These interactive sessions reinforce collaborative learning through presentations\, discussion activities\, and meaningful dialogue to build personal and community resilience and wellness. \nIRWA will run Wednesdays from April 15 to June 17. It consists of an orientation\, eight sessions\, and a graduation ceremony. IRWA is offered in person and through virtual sessions. DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the burial of 50 formerly homeless individuals and continue the legacy of light started by the late Michael Hinson of SELF Inc. \nLester Ross was well-known in the homeless community for his infectious smile and ability to apologize for being a “hoot” as described by the late Michael Hinson. Ross passed away from COVID-19 in the fall of 2020 and it was learned that his cremains were left unclaimed in the city morgue. \nThe late Michael Hinson of SELF Inc. and Mel Wells from ODAAT spearheaded efforts to host a memorial and bury Ross’s cremains. In this process\, it was learned there were unclaimed cremains of other homeless and formerly homeless men and women. \nHence\, the Lester Ross Memorial Fund was born to honor Ross and to provide dignified burials for others. There have been 123 burials to this date and there will be 50 more cremains laid to rest with their names and markers at this year’s burial.

DESCRIPTION:The 2025 American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence (AATOD) Conference will be held in Philadelphia at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown from Oct. 4-8. The 2025 conference theme is “The Evolving Field of Opioid Treatment.” \nOur intent is to educate and promote acceptance and integration of MAT options by patients\, families\, clinicians\, the medical system\, judicial systems\, government\, policy makers\, social service administrations\, and the general public. We will disseminate innovative\, evidence-based initiatives and treatment techniques to better serve patients and providers\, improve program development and administration\, promote integration across the continuum of care\, and enhance patient outcomes to assist communities in developing an effective response to this crisis. \nConference Objectives\nBy the end of the conference\, we will: \n\nEvaluate the rapidly changing nature and the severity of the opioid epidemic and associated outcomes and develop recommendations to improve the delivery of care in various populations based on evidence-based practices.\nInterpret emerging trends and regulatory and policy changes to determine their effects on clinical practice.\nDiscuss peer support and peer-run programs in treating opioid use disorder to improve patient outcomes.\nReview current evidence addressing the opioid epidemic and its implications for patients\, clinicians\, administrators\, and policy makers by identifying the most effective interventions.\nDisseminate innovative approaches\, referral pathways\, and partnerships designed to treat emerging needs of patients with opioid use disorder\, address pivotal issues in health\, and improve patient outcomes by providing examples of effective methods and how to implement them.\n\nThe AATOD Conference is the largest gathering of the opioid treatment community.
