CENTER CITY (WPVI) — Philadelphia health officials say the smoking ban at the city’s drug treatment centers isn’t detering people from seeking addiction help.

They started the smoking ban at all city-run, in-patient rehab centers in January.

Since then, they say the number of people seeking help at the facilities has gone up.

Philadelphia’s Commissioner of Behavioral Health department, David T. Jones, says the tobacco-free policy treats people for both substance abuse and tobacco addiction at the same time.

He says studies show it increases the chances someone will remain in recovery after discharge.

Every morning at 8 o’clock, social worker Shane Randall gets an email telling him which addiction-treatment facilities have available beds that day.

But Randall doesn’t work for a rehab facility, or for a homeless-services organization. He works for the Philadelphia Fire Department.

His job is a part of a new partnership between the Fire Department and EMS and the city’s Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services to create an emergency-response unit specifically designed to handle overdoses. Officials here say it’s the first of its kind in the country.

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Advertising has proven effective at getting people to consume things. But will it work to get people to stop consuming drugs? Philadelphia health officials are hoping the answer is yes.

Officials have launched an ad campaign proclaiming “BUPE works.” BUPE, or buprenorphine, is medically assisted treatment for addiction and the target audience is drug users who are ready to give it a try.

It’s the latest strategy to combat the opioid epidemic.

Despite an opioid overdose epidemic that has killed thousands and stalled the lives of many more, Philadelphia still has plenty of treatment slots, both inpatient and outpatient, that are going unused.

So on Tuesday, city officials announced an ad campaign to encourage more people to get started on what is considered the gold standard for battling an opioid addiction, medication-assisted treatment.

The $200,000 campaign in English and Spanish, which will include TV spots, billboards, and ads on public transportation, encourages people in opioid addiction to get started on buprenorphine, one of the three most commonly prescribed medicines to achieve lasting recovery.

Philly Voice    March 6, 2019

Philadelphia officials unveiled a new advertising campaign Tuesday that urges people battling opioid addiction to seek medication assisted treatment.

There are some 12,000 medication-assisted treatment slots in Philly – and 24 percent of them are currently available. City officials want to get the word out that help is available.

“This campaign is largely to say to individuals, ‘If you are ready to participate in treatment, we have a slot for you,’” said David T. Jones, commissioner of the Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbilities.

Medication-assisted treatment combines behavioral therapy with medication that helps people resist the cravings to revert to opioids like heroin and prescription painkillers. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved three drugs – buprenorphine, methadone and naltrexone – to be used as part of the treatment regimen.

When Ronald McAdams got out of prison at age 60, he didn’t want to go back to Philadelphia.

He’d spent more than 30 years trying to kick his opioid addiction, in and out of rehabs and detoxes, and was afraid if he went back he’d get hooked again.

He was always wary of buprenorphine because he thought it was just another thing to become dependent on. But this time around, he gave it a try. That was a year ago, and so far, so good: McAdams is going to night school for his high school diploma.

“I always just wanted to do something, to be productive,” said McAdams, now 61. “But when that disease have you, it don’t care, it comes first. I was dry bones, I was walking dead around here. Never know what it was to feel freedom. But I have a sense of freedom now.”

AThe Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and its leadership have a well-deserved reputation for pioneering recovery-oriented systems of care. Effective Jan. 1, 2019, the agency initiated an aggressive policy to address the problem of nicotine addiction among those receiving substance use disorder (SUD) services in contracted facilities.
