Think about giving first aid differently. Learn about skills needed to identify understand and respond to signs of behavioral or mental health challenges and crisis for youth.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour training course that teaches adult community members how to assist a young person (ages 12-18) who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis. YMHFA teaches participants how to identify, understand, and respond to signs and symptoms of mental illnesses and substance use challenges. Upon completion of the training, participants receive a comprehensive Youth Mental Health First Aid manual along with a three (3) year national MHFA certification.
Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including AD/HD), and eating disorders.
